Most of us have them now days. You hear them in stores, restaurants, airports, trains, schools, meetings, movie theaters, and even in church. I'm talking about the wonderful electronic leash we have come to affectionately call the Cell Phone. Everywhere you turn, someone's phone is going off and you are "blessed" with the ability to learn things about a complete stranger's personal life that you could have probably lived very well not ever finding out. It truly doesn't bother me in most cases, but there are times when you just wish they would take it outside.
Anyway...that's not EXACTLY the subject for today. In daily life, both at school and when I'm flying...I run across a diverse slice of humanity, from young to old. I absolutely love to sit back and observe how people interact with each other or their behavior when they don't realize anyone is paying attention. Not only is it very entertaining, but I think you learn a lot if you take the time to notice things around you. The other day, I was sitting on our version of a subway, MARTA...coming up from the airport to my car. Cell phones were going off with various ringtones. Most of the phones now can play actual versions of songs, complete with words..called Realtones. My phone is like this too. As I listened to the tones going off, some of them made me laugh...some made me wonder who was on the other end.
SO...the subject for today is ringtones. I saw an article the other day about how some people subconsciously assign ringtones to people in their phone book according to some hidden agenda. Hell, I do it on purpose! I have everything from country songs, to rock, to an alternative clip or two...to jazz...and put them with whomever they fit best. I make a lot of my own or find the free tones to download, since I'm also WAY too cheap to pay a fortune for something that is meant to be amusing. I tend to make a lot of my own ringtones to fit my strange sense of humor. Heck, I figure if I have to have the damned thing so I can be tracked down and also have to pay a fortune for the "privilege", I might as well have some fun with it!
I have a general ringtone for anyone not in my phone book. When the phone rings with that sound, I have the choice of getting up to see who it is or letting them have voice mail. From there I have a whole host of personality based ringtones. Everyone has their own "special" sound unique to their qualities. When they ring through...I smile and know exactly who it is. I really enjoy figuring out just the right sound for the friend or family member. I have totally different ringtones for friends, lovers (potential or the occasional actual occurance), acquaintances, or family members.
The last person I was involved with a little while back, had his ringtone that went from Bloodhound Gang's Bad Touch when things were good..to Stay Gone by Jimmy Wayne when things started going downhill. One of my son's tone is from the Dukes of Hazard..the other one is the theme from Dog the Bounty Hunter. My sons (who just FINALLY got cell phones this past Christmas...I know, I'm a mean parent)..are following in my tradition. One of them uses Darth Vader's theme for ME when I'm calling him! Good thing I have a healthy sense of humor! *L*
(I do have one friend that recently told me he keeps his phone on vibrate all the time...*grin* That is a whole new subject to blog about!...Right sweetie? There are several websites devoted to how to make your cell phone into a handy dandy sex toy vibrator ~ http://www.vibelet.com/ ~...who knew they were SO handy for other things than calls? Whipping your phone out a little for non-verbal communication MIGHT just get you thrown out of a restaurant when you're out to eat though!)
Okay, so has anyone else noticed the ringtones around them and ever wondered why someone chose that sound for someone or if it fits their own personality? Do some of you assign, whether on purpose or subconsciously...a particular sound to a particular person based on who they are? I can think of a song or two I'd put with some of you...What would yours be for me?
