Another One Bites the Dust...And Other Signs of Summer At My House - July 07, 2006

It seems that I cursed myself in May. I can actually remember each and every time I did it (well, MOST every time the words came out of my mouth). May was a killer month for me. I was teaching almost fulltime, flying more than I wanted...I had one son with a myriad of graduation activities and my daughter was "graduating" from 5th grade to start middle school in the fall and had lots of extra going on's that I got to attend as well. My middle son and NJROTC is ALWAYS busy. SO...being the bright woman that I am, I kept spouting off...not once, mind you...but MANY times to anyone that would listen..."If I LIVE until June, I'm going to sit around on my considerable hinney, put my feet up AND do nothing but rest and eat ice cream for a month or two."

Well, that appears to have done it. I seem to have cursed myself to a first four weeks into the summer that would make an Olympic sprinter hyperventilate. I really blame it on the male species. I mean...I SHOULD have knocked on wood each and every time I spouted off about my prized rest and relaxation in June...and did ANY of you offer up any of said wood to knock on (or do something to or with?)?? HECK no! So, it's y'alls fault that I'm about to recount my past week as a little peek into my scattered life and mind. *grin* Just hold on and laugh.

See that house up there? Doesn't look like a place where chaos reigns, now does it? It actually looks pretty normal and a little "Leave it to Beaver-ish". Wrong! It is a madhouse...or has a madwoman that lives there...not angry mad, but should be locked up in a padded room kinda mad. Of course, keep in mind that I wouldn't have it any other way. Life is crazy, but good.

This week has me all screwed up anyway. When I have a normal weekend, I can rarely keep track of my days, but throw a 4 day weekend in where Wednesday suddenly becomes Monday...and it just messes my simple little mind all up. Here are a few of my highlights from the week. It's been a great fun week, but I think I've also lost what few brain cells I've been hiding and hanging onto.

Rollback to last weekend. My oldest son, Chris (AKA the "Grillmaster") decided it would be a cool idea to have a massive bar-be-que, inviting about 50 of his closest friends and family...so that he could try out some of his new creative ideas for doing the caveman thing with all sorts of prey he didn't actually kill himself. SO, in spite of the trouble I knew this "simple" thing was going to bring forth, I said SURE! He promptly made all the arrangements, then came down with a stomach virus. Lucky us! That left it to Benj, Abby and I to do all the cleaning and shopping for the GRILLMASTER'S event. I had to make no fewer than 5 trips to Walmart hell.

THAT is a subject for another blog. He laid on the couch barking out orders until Monday morning.

As Monday morning dawned, he miraculously recovered and began to help everyone (or hinder) in the preparation process for the onslaught of humans about to come to our house. Everything was going as well as could be expected. It was a beautiful swealtering day in Georgia...only about 96 degrees at noon. Now...apparently my wishing power is a bit off. We haven't had any rain in the past month to really speak of here...so last week I did a naked rain dance in the back yard. Nothing! I naturally assumed I had not appeased the rain Gods, much less caught their attention or interested them. It seems as if my timing was a eensy bit off. Just as the GrillMaster went out to start the grill...a monsoon suddenly appeared over our house. You would have thought Noah was in the vicinity. The bottom literally dropped out of the sky with a real frog strangler, complete with the power flickering on and off. We looked at the radar, and the ONLY green and red blob IN Georgia, was directly over my house. *L* Well, being the adaptive humans we are, we dragged out the umbrellas and started grilling anyway. The clouds eventually parted, and other than a house WAY too hot from a laboring A/C system, the rest of the day was a blast and a success. (until almost 2:30 in the morning...I'm too old for this) I am still finding dishes or cans that were hidden around the house though. (Oh...one of my son's friends I had never met...got his first sight of me with my "assets" up in the air as I was rebooting my computer...I apologized and he told me "he had seen worse" *LOL*)

July 4th started WAY too early given my non-bedtime. 55,000 of my VERY closest sweaty friends and I ran the Peachtree Road Race. It's a 10K race through downtown Atlanta. It's grown to be the largest road race in the country, but whomever thought up a RACE in freakin' JULY in GEORGIA, ought to be drawn and quartered! I managed to crawl across the finish line to get the t-shirt I paid $30 to be tortured for. The rest of the day was spent lounging around at home and then later on the local square with a concert, street fair and fireworks. (One of the friends on my list saw the Grillmaster and me on the steps of a local church here during this event...as we were doing tacky people watching...and making fun of a lot of the sights we were seeing!) This night too ended at about 2:30 am. I had a houseful of teenagers decend to terrorize my neighborhood by shooting off fireworks the size of small animals in the street. Everyone escaped with all their fingers and toes. Good thing since I told them I was going to staple-gun them back on rather than take them to the ER if they screwed up.

Wednesday was destined to be a "calm" day. I got up at 5:30 to take Chris to work by 6 and work a flight. Everyone was remarkably well behaved on the flights...and it's a good thing because I think I might have thrown someone out of the plane if they hadn't been...can you say I was a "bit" tired? On my way home from the airport, I had picked up Abby and we swung by the store to pick up Chris. I went in to get a few things (after all, I'd HATE for them not to make their payroll because I didn't go in and spend a fortune 4-5 days a week)....came out after shooting the breeze with half the store...Chris and I got in the car...cranked it up...and I happened to remember as I was driving off that I had left ABBY in the store! Ummmm...well, it was a bit quiet! (Still no wood to knock on!)

(Now HOW could I forget her?)

Thursday was an uneventful day. I only flew in and out of storms at Hartsfield/Jackson...amid the delays...but didn't get hit by lightening. I considered that an upturn in my fortune and a boring day for the week! Now, granted I have no idea WHAT day of the week since they are all screwed up in my head, but I was glad to not have the sky fall. Last night as we were sitting outside...we looked up and saw a deer wandering through the yard and neighborhood. Somehow that didn't seem out of place at all in my world.

Today has been my normal boring day. I got up early to get a few things done, thinking it would FINALLY be a day to relax. Around 11 o'clock, I sit down to catch up on a few messages or blogs. All is well, the sun is shining, the world is spinning...and water is pouring out of my kitchen ceiling! Hmmmmm...as I sat here looking for a minute or two trying to remember if I had recently installed a waterfall in the kitchen and watching it cascade prettily over the ceiling fan blades...it suddenly occured to me that perhaps Abby might have possibly forgotten she started her bath upstairs. *L* So, everything is in fast motion for the next 30 minutes as I find every towel in the house and watch my ceiling droop a bit. Oh well I needed something to fix this weekend! Benj came in with the mail...oh goody...not one but TWO letters from the IRS. While I stood there contemplating whether to just sit down and laugh, I thought maybe I better open them to find out if I needed to start planning a getaway and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they owed ME more money for a change and were sending ME another check. (might come in handy for fixing said ceiling!)

I MUST be living right...OR someone thinks I'm about to crack. *L* Whatever the case...life is good. Summer is almost halfway over...but there is still plenty of time to enjoy it and lots more smiles to make. We will have many more cook-outs (maybe kill another grill or two since we use them 4-5 times a week)....go to laser shows and movies...maybe take a little short trip or two...stay up WAY too late every night and not get dressed till noon...and have lots more laughs and things go haywire. Mom was right...these are the best years of my life. Now if I could only get a "little" bit more rest before school starts up again, I'll be in great shape. Of course, I could be persuaded to be worn out too under the right circumstances....I do have a bit of catching up to do in an area or two that is way past due for some attention.

Who has some wood they would let me knock on?? *wink*
